Steven J. Angell was born in Evanston, Illinois. Steven attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following graduation, Steven moved to Oakland, California, and enrolled in the Paralegal Studies Certificate Program at San Francisco State University. After completing the program, Steven worked as a criminal defense paralegal at a small private firm handling retained and court-appointed cases. While working at the firm, Steven was appointed as a paralegal on a month-long homicide jury trial. He left the firm in 2015 and began a career in federal public defense, holding legal assistant and paralegal positions at the Federal Public Defender Office for the Northern District of California and the Federal Community Defender Office- Eastern District of Michigan.

Steven graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois at Chicago Law School (UIC Law), where he received a certificate in criminal law and procedure. While in law school, Steven worked as a research and writing law clerk for several private criminal defense attorneys in Chicago. He also represented clients in clemency and post-conviction proceedings as a licensed student attorney, completed a two-semester externship with the Illinois Innocence Project, and interned with the Federal Defender Program in Chicago. In May 2022, Steven was nominated by UIC Law as a member of the National Order of Scribes, an honorary organization founded to recognize graduating law students who excel in legal writing.

After admission to the Illinois Bar in May 2023, Steven began working at the Winnebago County Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender in DUI court handling major traffic and DUI cases from initial appearance to resolution. He joined Abert A. Altamore & Associates, P.C. in July 2024.

Steven is a member of the National College of DUI Defense (NCDD) and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA).

Outside of work, Steven enjoys reading, cooking, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends.
